| Bio: | Up until January 31, 2008, I worked in a bookstore (for almost 15 years!). The company I worked for shut it down so now I'm unemployed and at a loss as to what to do next. All I do know is that I don't want to go back to retail. For now I'm just lazing about at home, mostly catching up on old TV shows on DVD and reading. I wish I could take this time to travel (I wanna go back to the UK!) but having to be all grown-up and adult with my savings isn't conducive to globetrotting. Although, I shall have to plan some sort of an escape for three weeks or so in February 2010 regardless of being all grown-up and whatnot. The Winter Olympics are to be held here at that time and there is NO WAY I am sticking around for that. Um, anyone (preferably not living in Canada--seriously, this whole thing is making me desperate to leave the entire country for the duration) have a sofa to spare? I'm trying to do a proper Spring Clean (that is quickly becoming a Summer Clean at the rate that I'm going). I really must go through all my worldly possessions and decide what to keep and what to bin. But it requires thought and action when what I really want to do is get in touch with my inner sloth. And it's just so difficult to part with books. *clings to the many bookcases* Lately, I've been bitten by the science fiction bug. This is not the first time, as I've loved science fiction ever since I saw Space 1999 for the first time. Sure it was supreme space cheese, but eight-year-old me didn't know better. ;) In my teens I read loads and loads of science fiction novels and watched a hell of a lot of television series and feature films within the genre. As time passed and I got older, I found myself growing tired of the science fiction novel; it all seemed the same thing to me after a while. I think it was because, at that time, I wasn't able to find the kinds of stories I wanted to read about. Unfortunately, I couldn't really describe what those preferences were (it was a case of "I'll know it when I see it") making it difficult to get recommendations, so eventually I just stopped looking. I was lucky enough that there were television programmes that mostly satisfied my science fiction leanings: classic Doctor Who, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Alien Nation, Space: Above and Beyond, Roswell, Red Dwarf, Odyssey 5, Farscape, an episode here and there of Stargate SG1, and many others, I'm sure, that I've forgotten about over time. But the occasional science fiction programme (and feature film) have always been par for the course and present in some manner in my life. Now, suddenly, I have such a craving for science fiction that I am finally reading it again. I think the last science fiction novel I read was actually a reread of Alan Dean Foster's 'Splinter of the Mind's Eye' around the time the Star Wars movies were re-released for the 20th anniversary back in 1997. I just finished a short-ish novel and am starting up a massive 988 page tome. So far so good! I've also been watching some of my old faves, like the aforementioned Space: Above and Beyond and I have that urge to watch Farscape again (although that urge strikes on a fairly regular basis as it's my favourite science fiction show of all time). I can't express how much I am thoroughly enjoying this immersion. It's also a nostalgic journey for me, as I've loved this genre for so much of my life.
