I need to vent about this. It's a weird nitpicky thing but it drives me up the wall whenever I see it--and I can't believe I see this come up in a tech savvy place like io9 as well as other parts of the internet.

Basically: IF NIELSEN APPROACHED YOU VIA MAIL (A PACKAGE WITH WHICH TO MANUALLY TRACK AND RECORD YOUR TV VIEWING HABITS) OR IF THEY KNOCKED ON YOUR DOOR AND ASKED IF THEY COULD INSTALL METERS IN YOUR TV VIEWING DEVICES (TVs, DVRs, etc.) THEN WHAT YOU WATCH WILL HAVE AN IMPACT. IF YOU RECEIVED NO PACKAGE NOR A KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR THEN WHAT YOU WATCH OR DON'T WATCH ON TV MEANS NOTHING RATINGS-WISE.

Seriously. This is the way it works. I know because I was a member of the "Nielsen Family" for a little while and they had to install the meter in my TV in order to track what I watched. How else do you think they can track what you watch? There's no way to tell otherwise. I mean, honestly, people, how the hell would they even know the age of the TV viewers so they can breakdown the viewership by demos? Think about it. They get all this data from you when they're installing the meters, of course!

I just laugh and laugh and laugh when I see shit like this because unless you have a meter/package, you and your viewing habits are meaningless. I mean, it's a nice thought and everything, and yeah, definitely watch and support your show(s), but thinking this is how things in TV Ratings Land works is woefully misinformed. I'm sure watching a show via a network's website or downloading it from iTunes counts for something, but just on your un-metered TV? NO.

Phew. Okay. Had to get that off my chest.

And apropos of nothing, my LJ icon choice clearly means I have to see Iron Man 3 asap because I need Tony Stark's sassy hotness in my life.
